‘My husband deserves more credit for keeping our marriage together than me’ — Omotola Jalade

‘My husband deserves more credit for keeping our marriage together than me’ — Omotola Jalade

Nollywood actress Omotola Jalade has given her husband, Matthew Ekeinde, credit for playing a major role in keeping their marriage together, describing him as a mature and confident man.

The actress made the disclosure while reflecting on her marriage and the different ways both partners have contributed to making their relationship work.

According to Omotola, her husband deserves more recognition for sustaining their marriage because he has had to deal with the pressures that come with being married to a highly successful and famous woman.

“My husband should be given more credits for keeping this marriage together more than me. He’s a very mature person. That’s the truth. I’ll say more of him. He should be giving more credits for keeping this marriage together than me,” she said.

She explained that while her husband is also well-known, she has been in the public eye for a much longer period, which means he often has to deal with the attention, praise and expectations that come with her fame.

“As the man, he has more pressure than me. And as the famous one, he’s very famous too now himself, but as the one that was very famous a very long time, he’s the one at the receiving end,” she said.

Omotola noted that the responsibilities of her career often mean that her husband has to deal with the aftermath of the attention and demands surrounding her public life.

“He’s the one that everything falls back on you. You’re working, you’re doing everything, you don’t care and you’re in it, you’re doing your thing, so he’s the one that just gets the residue of everything that comes back from the offshoot of us,” she explained.

The actress praised her husband for how he has handled both her personality and their relationship, saying he has managed himself, her and their union with maturity.

“So yeah, so he’s managed himself very well, he’s managed me very well and he’s managed his union very well, I must say. And he’s a very mature person,” she added.

Omotola also revealed that she had come to realise that her husband does several things that she believes many other men may not do in their relationships.

She suggested that they could one day start a couples’ boot camp where they would share lessons from their own marriage and experiences.

“I’ve been telling him, I said maybe sometime in life, maybe we should actually start some kind of couple bootcamp and just share our experiences,” she said.

However, the actress stressed that there is no universal formula for a successful marriage because every relationship comes with its own unique challenges, personalities and circumstances.

According to her, couples can learn how to manage the peculiarities of their individual relationships rather than looking for a single solution that works for everyone.

“Every relationship is not the same, so it’s not one size fits all. It’s not, ‘Oh, this is the magic word or this is the magic sentence,’ because people are different and experiences are different and the mindsets are different. Everything’s just peculiar,” she said.

Omotola further acknowledged that both partners have a role to play in making a relationship work, noting that even difficult situations can sometimes improve depending on how they are handled.

“What we can do is we can tell you how you can manage the peculiarity because at the end of the day, like they always say, it takes two,” she said.

Describing herself as the more difficult partner in her marriage, Omotola said she has seen how her husband has been able to handle her over the years.

“In my relationship, I would say I’m the difficult one. I’m really the difficult one. And I’ve seen how he’s been able to handle me,” she revealed.

She maintained that her husband’s maturity, confidence and ability to understand her are among the reasons she believes he has been the right partner for her.

“If I wasn’t married to my husband, I don’t think any other man could have handled me. And that’s the truth because I know myself,” Omotola said.

She concluded by describing him as a very mature and self-confident person, reiterating that he deserves significant credit for the longevity of their marriage.
