Nigerian Army opens investigation into alleged s3xual abuse involving serving officer

The Nigerian Army has commenced an investigation into reports of alleged sexual abuse involving a serving officer, Captain Etim Essien, who is currently attached to Headquarters 3 Division in Jos.

The officer has been accused of sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl who is deaf and non-speaking, impregnating her and fathering a child with her while she was allegedly living under his family’s care in Taraba State.

SaharaReporters had reported that the victim is the younger step-sister of Essien’s wife, Blessing Essien.

Reacting to the report in a statement issued on Saturday, September 12, the Nigerian Army said it takes allegations of sexual abuse, particularly those involving minors and other vulnerable persons, with utmost seriousness.

The military said appropriate steps had been initiated to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the reported incident.

It added that since the allegation is still under investigation, it would be inappropriate to make definitive comments on the culpability of any individual at this stage.

According to the Army, it remains committed to due process, fairness and protecting the rights and dignity of all parties involved.

The military also said it was aware that relevant civil authorities were looking into the matter and would cooperate fully with them to ensure that the allegation is thoroughly and transparently investigated in line with existing laws and regulations.
