Nigerians on social media have reacted with disappointment and criticism following the Super Eagles’ 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, qualifier on Tuesday.
Guinea-Bissau secured the victory at the 24 de Setembro National Stadium in Bissau, with Franculino Djú opening the scoring in the first half after receiving an assist from Renato Nhaga.
Mama Baldé doubled the hosts’ advantage in the 65th minute before Álvaro Djaló completed the 3-0 victory with a stoppage-time goal.
The defeat has triggered reactions from Nigerian football fans on X, with some expressing frustration over the team’s performance and criticising individual players.
One user, @akwaibomdaily, singled out Calvin Bassey for praise while criticising Stanley Nwabali, Bruno Onyemeachi, Moses Simon and Semi Ajayi.
“The only serious footballer in the Super Eagles is Bassey. Nwabali, Bruno, Moses and Ajayi are very unserious players,” the user wrote.
Another user, @_AbiolaPharays, said the team’s performance had left supporters disappointed but noted that Nigeria still had matches to play.
“It is the duty of the Super Eagles to always make us sad. It isn’t time to bring our calculators out because there are still matches to play,” the user said.
@Habatovation1 argued that FIFA rankings were irrelevant without quality performances, describing the current Super Eagles side as incapable of producing results.
Meanwhile, @BukolaOfGod questioned why Nigeria’s players, despite featuring for top clubs abroad, often struggle to replicate their performances when playing for the national team.
Other supporters called for changes to the squad, with some specifically questioning Nwabali’s continued involvement with the national team.
@GodwinsOE also called for greater scrutiny of Ademola Lookman’s recent performances, saying the forward had struggled for both club and country.
Some fans, however, shifted the blame beyond the players, arguing that the coaching staff and players should both be held accountable for the team’s poor performances.
@sportingshina said it was time players were held responsible for repeatedly failing to give their best in the national colours.
Another supporter, @sorungbefa, criticised coach Eric Chelle’s continued trust in some players, warning that it could eventually cost him his job.
The reactions reflect the growing frustration among supporters following Nigeria’s disappointing result in Bissau.
