In its weather outlook released in Abuja on Tuesday, the agency predicted patches of clouds over the northern region on Wednesday, with chances of morning thunderstorms accompanied by light rains in parts of Taraba and Kebbi states.
Later in the day, isolated thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected over parts of Taraba, Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Sokoto, Katsina, Zamfara, Jigawa, Kano and Kaduna states.
For the North-Central region, NiMet said thunderstorms with light rains would occur over parts of Nasarawa, Niger, Benue and the Federal Capital Territory during the morning hours, while moderate rains are expected across most parts of the region in the afternoon or evening.
In the southern region, the agency forecast a cloudy atmosphere with chances of morning rains over parts of Lagos, Ondo, Ogun, Oyo, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Cross River, Abia, Imo, Ebonyi and Akwa Ibom states. Moderate rains are expected over most parts of the region later in the day.
For Thursday, NiMet predicted patches of clouds over the northern region, with morning thunderstorms and light rains possible over parts of Jigawa, Kano, Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe and Kaduna.
It said thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains would occur in Jigawa, Kano, Kaduna, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa and Taraba states during the afternoon or evening.
Across the North-Central region, sunny skies with patches of clouds are expected, with morning thunderstorms and light rains possible over parts of the FCT, Nasarawa, Plateau, Niger and Benue states. Moderate rains are expected across the region later in the day.
NiMet also forecast light morning rains over parts of Ondo, Ogun, Abia, Imo, Enugu, Ebonyi, Lagos, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states on Thursday, with continuous rains expected over most parts of the southern region later in the day.
The agency warned of a high possibility of flooding in parts of Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states during the forecast period.
For Friday, NiMet predicted partly cloudy skies across the northern region, with chances of morning thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains in Taraba and Adamawa states.
By the afternoon or evening, thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected over Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Kano, Jigawa, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Adamawa and Taraba states.
In the central region, sunny skies with patches of clouds are expected, while parts of the FCT, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa and Niger states may experience morning thunderstorms with light rains. Moderate rains are expected across most parts of the region later in the day.
The southern region is expected to remain cloudy, with moderate morning rains possible over parts of Ondo, Ebonyi, Lagos, Ogun, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states. Moderate rains are also expected across most parts of the region later in the day.
NiMet warned that strong winds could precede thunderstorms in affected areas and urged residents to take necessary precautions.
The agency advised residents to secure loose objects, avoid driving during heavy rainfall and disconnect electrical appliances from power sockets.
It also urged people to stay away from tall trees during thunderstorms to avoid injuries from falling branches or trees.
NiMet further directed states with a high possibility of flash floods to activate their emergency response systems, while airline operators were advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports from the agency for effective flight planning.
Residents were also encouraged to stay updated through NiMet’s official weather alerts.
