Nollywood film Black Market breaks world record with 51,000 viewers

Nollywood film Black Market has broken the Guinness World Record for the largest attendance at a film screening in a single location, after 51,000 viewers watched the movie at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Lagos.

The record-breaking screening took place on Saturday, September 26, as thousands of movie lovers gathered at the iconic venue for the premiere of the crime thriller.

According to Guinness World Records, 51,000 viewers qualified for the record after remaining at the screening from the beginning of the film to the end. The figure surpassed the previous record of 43,624 attendees, set in 2015 during a screening of the Filipino film Felix Manalo at the Philippine Arena.

Organisers had initially set a target of 50,000 simultaneous viewers as part of their attempt to break the existing record.

The event attracted Nollywood stars, film lovers and other dignitaries, including Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat and Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture Toke Benson.

Although Hamzat announced that about 64,000 people attended the event, Guinness World Records clarified that only 51,000 viewers met the qualifying criteria for the record because the attendance was based on those who watched the film from start to finish.

The announcement of the new record was met with cheers, celebrations and fireworks at TBS as Black Market officially secured its place in the Guinness World Records.
