North Carolina State Highway Patrol Sgt. Nekime Oxendine is accused of shooting Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Adam Bean, 42, outside a woman’s home in Hope Mills on March 27.
Bean, who had served with the sheriff’s office for nearly two decades, was reportedly at the woman’s residence despite her earlier request that he not come over.
According to search warrant documents, the woman had previously been in a relationship with Oxendine before entering a long-term relationship with Bean. Messages between the woman and Oxendine reportedly showed him repeatedly questioning her relationship with Bean and accusing her of being unfaithful with the captain.
The woman reportedly lived with Bean until December 2025 before reconnecting with Oxendine in February and March 2026.
Their alleged exchanges showed Oxendine continuing to question the woman about her feelings for Bean, including asking whether she found Bean more attractive and accusing her of still having feelings for him.
On the day of the shooting, Bean reportedly arrived at the woman’s home despite being asked not to. After he allegedly threatened to honk his vehicle’s horn and cause a scene, the woman went outside.
Oxendine reportedly followed her outside, and Bean allegedly got out of his vehicle and moved aggressively toward the trooper.
Investigators allege that Oxendine initially fired two shots into the ground before firing several rounds at Bean when he continued approaching him.
Bean collapsed at the scene, and the woman reportedly attempted to perform CPR before deputies arrived. He was later pronounced dead.
Oxendine remains in custody without bail and has been placed on administrative leave following the incident.
He is expected to return to court in November, while the North Carolina State Highway Patrol conducts a separate internal investigation into the shooting.
