Operatives of the Abia State Police Command have recovered 28 human skulls and bones from two suspected criminal hideouts in forests in Umunneochi Local Government Area of the state.
The remains were recovered from hideouts in Umuaku-Isuochi and Nneato forests during an intelligence-led operation carried out by various tactical units of the command.
The operation involved personnel from the Violent Crime Response Unit, Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Anti-Cultism Unit, Intelligence Response Squad, Isuochi Divisional Police Station and Rapid Response Squad.
The development was disclosed on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, DSP Maureen Chinaka.
According to her, the operation was conducted as part of ongoing raids across the state under the directive of the Commissioner of Police, CP Wilfred Afolabi, tagged “Operation No Hideout for Criminal Elements in the State.”
Police said the suspects fled their camps upon the arrival of the operatives, after which the hideouts were dismantled.
The command said the 28 skulls and bones recovered were suspected to be those of kidnapping victims, adding that investigations were ongoing to establish their identities and circumstances surrounding their deaths.
Efforts were also being intensified to apprehend the fleeing suspects, while security monitoring of the area continues.
The police urged residents to report suspicious activities and other security concerns to the nearest police station.
