‘Tinubu is hale and hearty’ — Presidency responds to concerns over President’s absence

The Presidency has assured Nigerians that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is “hale and hearty” and remains engaged in official duties despite his prolonged absence from the country.

Tinubu had travelled out of Nigeria on August 30 for a three-week working vacation, but his return was later extended by a few days. The Presidency subsequently said he would return to Nigeria this week.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said Tinubu had continued working while abroad and did not need to be physically present in Abuja to discharge his responsibilities.

“Nigeria’s President is hale and hearty. He has been on a working vacation, which he is perfectly entitled to. In this digital age, he does not need to be physically present in Abuja to do the work for which he was elected in 2023,” Onanuga said.

He said Tinubu had held meetings with investors in France, including engagements linked to the proposed $7 billion Gateway Deep Seaport and Blue Marine Special Economic Zone at Ogun Waterside.

Onanuga also addressed questions over Tinubu’s absence from the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, noting that Vice President Kashim Shettima had represented Nigeria at the gathering.

He further pointed out that South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi were also absent from the UNGA.

The presidential aide said Tinubu was expected to return to Nigeria this week to participate in activities marking the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary and attend the Lagos premiere of a film honouring the late MKO Abiola.
