Twelve migrants have d+ied in two separate incidents while attempting to cross the Aegean Sea, including six people whose boat collided with a Greek police patrol vessel, according to authorities.
The incidents occurred on Monday off the Greek islands of Lesbos and Samos, with a baby and four women among those who d+ied in the collision near Lesbos, a coast guard official told the Agence France-Presse (AFP).
According to the official, a speedboat carrying migrants collided with the port side of a police patrol vessel. Eight people were rescued following the incident.
In a separate incident off the island of Samos, six migrants — five men and a woman — d+ied after their small boat capsized, the coast guard official said.
Another 14 people aboard the boat were rescued, including a person suspected of organising the journey, who was reportedly Iranian.
The Aegean Sea is a major migration route for people travelling from Turkey in an attempt to reach Europe. The crossing has been associated with numerous d+eaths, particularly when overcrowded boats capsize or encounter difficult conditions.
In September, one person d+ied while 25 others remained missing after a boat carrying migrants sank off Gavdos, an island near Crete.
The circumstances surrounding Monday’s incidents were not fully detailed in the reports available at the time of publication.
