Nigerian cleric Apostle Emmanuel Iren has urged Christians not to feel ashamed of expressing their faith, questioning why passionate displays of devotion to God are sometimes mocked while similar enthusiasm for celebrities and sports personalities is widely accepted.
Speaking during a sermon, Iren recalled watching a video of a grown man crying while American singer Beyoncé performed, asking why such an emotional reaction was tolerated while Christians who sing and praise God are often ridiculed.
“As a man, why are you crying when Beyonce is singing? As a man, you are a joker. But if they find you in church singing and praising the Lord, they call you a fool for it,” he said.
The preacher also compared religious devotion with football fandom, pointing out that some supporters purchase season tickets to attend multiple matches but may criticise Christians for contributing financially to their churches.
He further questioned why displaying a pastor’s framed photograph at home might appear unusual to some people, while putting up a picture of Portuguese football star Cristiano Ronaldo, popularly known as CR7, would attract little criticism.
According to Iren, human beings are naturally inclined to worship, arguing that those who do not worship God may direct their devotion towards other things.
“Every human being is created to worship, and the ones who don’t worship God are worshipping something,” he said.
However, he urged Christians to examine their practices against biblical teachings and avoid extremes before dismissing criticism of their faith.
Iren encouraged believers to remain confident in their devotion to God and their generosity towards the gospel, insisting that they should not apologise for their commitment to Jesus.
“Don’t apologise for loving Jesus. Don’t apologise for being generous to the course of the gospel. Don’t apologise,” he said.
