Saudi Arabia has executed two Bangladeshi nationals over what authorities described as an immoral act inside a mosque in the holy city of Mecca.
The individuals were identified as Nazrul Islam Abdul Basir and Siti Akhtar, who were executed in the Makkah region on Wednesday, October 14, according to a statement issued by the Saudi Ministry of Interior.
The ministry said security authorities arrested the pair following the incident and charged them after an investigation. A competent court subsequently found them guilty and sentenced them to de@th under Ta’zir, a form of discretionary punishment under Islamic law.
According to the statement, the court cited the gravity of the offence and the violation of the mosque’s sanctity in reaching its decision. The judgment was upheld by the relevant judicial authority before a royal order was issued for the sentences to be carried out.
The ministry reaffirmed the Saudi government’s commitment to maintaining security, upholding justice and enforcing Islamic law against those who violate the sanctity of mosques.
It also warned that anyone found guilty of similar offences would face punishment under the kingdom’s laws.
However, Saudi authorities have not publicly provided detailed information about the precise nature of the act or the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The executions have also drawn a response from Bangladesh. According to reports, the Bangladesh Consulate General in Jeddah said it had not been notified in advance and had sought formal clarification from Saudi authorities.
