‘Money doesn’t define a man’ — Morayo Afolabi-Brown says leadership, kindness matter more in marriage

Media personality Morayo Afolabi-Brown has said money alone does not define a man or determine whether he is worthy of respect in marriage, stressing that leadership, responsibility and kindness are equally important.

Speaking at Kayhikersclub, Afolabi-Brown recalled that her husband did not have a job when they got married and that she handled most of the family’s financial responsibilities during their early years together.

Despite the situation, she said his conduct and sense of responsibility never made her see him as less of a man.

“The first few years, I was doing everything, but you would never know. Not because of what I did, but because of how he carried himself,” she said.

According to her, her husband remained actively involved in their home, prayed for her before she went out, took interest in her work and participated in important family decisions.

She explained that what mattered to her was the way he carried himself and the leadership he demonstrated, rather than simply how much money he brought into the home.

“Money is good, but that leadership ability, I believe in you. It’s important to us,” she said.

Afolabi-Brown also described marriage as a partnership, urging couples not to see financial difficulties as a battle against each other.

“When you go back home and you and your husband are discussing how bad things are, it’s not you against each other. It’s both of you against a problem,” she said.

She further advised people to prioritise kindness when choosing a life partner, arguing that a person’s heart and willingness to remain supportive during difficult times can be more important than outward qualities.

Her comments were echoed during the discussion, with the speakers stressing that marriage should be viewed as a team effort in which both partners contribute different strengths.

The discussion also highlighted that a man can contribute to his wife’s success through strategy, emotional support, decision-making and other forms of value even when he is not the primary financial provider.

Afolabi-Brown’s remarks have since sparked conversations online about gender roles, financial responsibility and the qualities that truly sustain a marriage.
