Speaking during a recent interview with Nedu, the police explained that suspects granted bail are required to sign documentation indicating that no money was paid for their release.
According to the police, the bail form clearly states that the person was released without making any payment, and the suspect or guarantor is expected to sign the document.
“The law does not allow any person to pay money for bail at any police station,” the police stated.
The Force advised anyone who is asked to pay money before being granted bail to immediately report the matter rather than complying with the demand.
It urged members of the public to contact the Inspector-General of Police if an officer insists on collecting money for bail.
The police further encouraged Nigerians to use the official complaint channels available for reporting misconduct, including text messages and WhatsApp, where applicable.
The warning comes amid concerns over alleged extortion and unlawful demands for money from members of the public at police stations.
