‘Choose divorce over misery’ — South African lawyer advises women in unhappy marriages

‘Choose divorce over misery’ — South African lawyer advises women in unhappy marriages

South African lawyer Akani Mongwane has advised women who are unhappy in their marriages to consider divorce rather than remain in relationships that could affect their mental and physical health.

Mongwane gave the advice in a Facebook post on Tuesday, October 20, arguing that women should prioritise their well-being instead of enduring unhappy marriages.

According to the lawyer, it is better for a woman to become a financially secure divorcee than remain a miserable wife.

“Divorce him before you are diagnosed with depression and high blood pressure. Men will never change. If we can start your divorce now, by December you will be eating his pension money with your kids,” she wrote.

Mongwane added that women should not remain in unhappy marriages simply to maintain their marital status, insisting that their happiness and well-being should come first.

His comments have drawn attention to conversations around marriage, divorce, financial security and the emotional toll of remaining in an unhappy relationship.
