Uganda clarifies position after Nigerian woman with Ebola transited country

Uganda’s Ministry of Health has clarified that the country has no confirmed active Ebola cases following reports of a Nigerian woman who tested positive for the virus after travelling to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

In a statement dated October 20, 2026, the ministry disclosed that preliminary findings indicated that the woman transited through Uganda in early October without showing symptoms before developing them after arriving in Nigeria.

However, Ugandan authorities stressed that her passage through the country does not establish that she contracted the virus there, adding that investigations into the source of her exposure are ongoing.

The ministry also said Nigerian authorities had yet to provide detailed information about the woman’s travel itinerary and clinical history, which are needed to support further investigations and possible contact tracing.

“We wish to clarify that, as at the time of this statement, Uganda has NO confirmed active Ebola cases,” the statement read.

The Ugandan government added that it had maintained limited provisions for humanitarian and diplomatic travel but would strengthen health screening and other preventive measures at entry points in collaboration with relevant agencies.

It urged residents to remain calm and vigilant, avoid panic and practise regular handwashing and sanitisation to help prevent the spread of infectious diseases.

The ministry assured the public that it would continue to provide verified updates through its official communication channels.
